THE PHILOSOPHY
Bikram Yoga is a original form of hot yoga that was created by Bikram Choudhury in the 1970s.
It involves a series of 26 postures and two breathing exercises, performed in a room heated to 40 degrees celcius.
While the practice of Bikram Yoga is physically challenging, it also incorporates a unique philosophy that emphasises self-discipline, mental focus, and the pursuit of inner peace and clarity regardless of the external situation.
One of the key philosophical principles of Bikram Yoga is the concept of "self-realization" stemming from the philosophies of Paramahansa Yogananda. The practice of yoga is a means of achieving self-realization or, the realisation of one's true self and purpose in life. Through the physical and mental discipline of Bikram Yoga, our students are able to connect with their innermost selves, find the strength and focus within their innermost self and as a result, discover their true potential.
Another important principle of Bikram Yoga is the concept of "integrity." Integrity within the practice refers to the quality of being truthful, and consistent in one's approach to the practice. This includes being truthful to yourself by doing your best and not going beyond what your body wishes. The practice of integrity in this practice also includes being respectful and compassionate towards yourself when you practice the series, and compassionate towards the other students practicing along side of you.
By embodying integrity in their practice and in their lives, our Bikram Yoga studennts are able to cultivate a deep sense of inner peace and fulfilment.
Bikram Yoga also emphasises the importance of mental focus and concentration. In the heated environment of a Bikram Yoga class, it can be easy to become distracted by the physical discomfort and the surrounding environment.
Through the practice of mental focus, breath control and concentration, our students are able to maintain their inner calm and remain centred amidst the chaos. This skill can then be applied to other areas of life, helping practitioners to stay focused and productive even in challenging situations.
Finally, Bikram Yoga teaches the importance of self-discipline and commitment. The practice of Bikram Yoga is physically demanding and requires a great deal of dedication and perseverance. By committing to a regular practice and developing self-discipline, our students are able to build strength, resilience, and mental fortitude. This, in turn, allows them to tackle challenges in other areas of life with greater ease and confidence.
Whether you are a seasoned practitioner of this practice or just starting out on your yoga journey, the philosophy of Bikram Yoga can provide valuable guidance and inspiration for your practice and your life.
